Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Receives Safer Grant


(MIAMI, December 2, 2013) – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) has received the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER) on November 29, 2013. This $11,431,650 grant will prevent the imminent layoff of 59 firefighters, the closure of two fire engine companies, an aerial platform company and the reduction of staffing on a number of other units for the next two years. 

The SAFER Grant is a competitive and discretionary federal grant program that provides direct funding to fire departments to assist with staffing and deployment capabilities in order to respond to emergencies, and assure that communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. SAFER Grants achieve this purpose by funding the hiring of new firefighters, the rehiring of firefighters that have been laid off, the retention of firefighters facing imminent layoffs and the filling of positions that were vacated through attrition.

“I am extremely thankful and pleased that we received this grant,” said Fire Chief Dave Downey. “This will allow us to maintain the current level of fire rescue service that the residents of Miami-Dade County have come to expect from MDFR.”
